Detailed information

Product detailed description

A moktak is a traditional wooden instrument in the shape of a fish, which is used in Buddhist temples during chanting sutras, ceremonies, rites or to summon people to meditation. It comes from East Asia and is used in China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam and other Asian countries.

It is a hollow, round instrument with a hole, made from a single piece of wood. The rhythm is given by the blows of a wooden mallet.

Moktaks can be of different sizes - from 15 cm for use in everyday practice to sizes of more than one meter, which are used in temples on special occasions.

Moktaks, which are used in the Korean Zen tradition for regular practice, are usually placed on the right side of the altar on a soft cushion to prevent unpleasant sounds when placed on the altar and to prevent damage to the instrument. They are often hand-carved with beautiful ornaments.
